The U.S. Department of State issued a security warning on Dec. 12 over potential demonstrations in response to deadly bombings that struck Istanbul on Dec. 10.
“The U.S. Consulate General would like to inform U.S. citizens that demonstrations in response to the recent bombings in Beşiktas are planned throughout Istanbul on Monday evening, starting at 5:30 p.m. There will be a solidarity rally at Vodafone Arena in Beşiktas and surrounding neighborhoods. Please note that similar demonstrations may occur spontaneously, with little or no warning, throughout the week in others parts of Istanbul and in surrounding areas,” it stated.
US CITIZENS SHOULD AVOID DEMONSTRATIONS
The consulate said U.S. citizens should avoid demonstrations and large events, even if intended to be peaceful, as the rallies could “turn confrontational.”
“We strongly encourage U.S. citizens to maintain a high level of vigilance, be aware of local events, monitor local media for updates, and take the appropriate steps to bolster your personal security,” it added
